In Italy, drinks company Campari, which is controlled by the Garavoglia family, said on 15 May that sales increased by 4% to €279.3 million during the first three months of 2012. Pre-tax profit at the Milan-based group also rose by 4.6% to €52.8 million during the quarter.

Sales at H&M were up 13.6% to SEK27.83 billion (€3.14 billion) in the three months to the end of February 2012, from SEK24.5 billion during the same period last year, the company said on 29 March.

German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, controlled by the Mohn family, will consider either listing on the stock exchange or bringing in private equity investment in a bid to access finance for growth.

That’s according to a spokeswoman for the family business, who told CampdenFB that a decision hasn’t been made on “how or when” Bertelsmann will bring in outside investors.

John Sargent, who led the expansion of Doubleday & Company from a small family business to a publishing giant, died on 5 February aged 87.

Sargent worked at the American group, which was a family business until it was sold in 1986, for more than 40 years. He began as a copywriter for a group publication before gradually climbing up the ranks.

The business has reached agreements with its lenders for debt restructuring and will continue to operate under bankruptcy protection. "We are continuing to work with our lenders to address our balance sheet," a Freedom spokesman told the Wall Street Journal.
