China’s billionaire business families are setting up their own family offices at a phenomenal rate as ageing principals shift their priorities from wealth creation to preservation and succession.

More than three-quarters of Chinese families surveyed by Campden Wealth said they either established or joined a family office after 2010. In the last six years, interest has been growing, and almost one-third reported they began using family office services in either 2018 (13%) or in the first eight months of 2019 (18%).

British family business Pentland Group has acquired Speedo North America for $170 million, ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and the competition of many Speedo athletes.

The second-generation $3 billion group announced this week it had entered into a definitive agreement for the business with apparel company PVH Corp. Speedo International licensed the Speedo trademark to a PVH subsidiary for use in North America and the Caribbean.

The $51.5 billion (€46.8 billion) LVMH empire will acquire the $4.4 billion Tiffany for $135 per share in cash, in a transaction with an equity value of $16.2 billion (€14.7 billion). The luxury goods giant increased its offer from $120 per share last month.

Spanish family businesses Melia Hotels International, Inditex and Damm have been named among the top 10 companies leading the digital transformation of the Spanish economy.

Research by the Coordenadas Institute of Governance and Applied Economics hailed the families and public peers, such as Telefonica and Seat, for adapting their business models through digitalisation. The UK’s largest independent travel agent announced today they had agreed to acquire Thomas Cook’s 555 high street stores for an undisclosed amount. The 39-year-old company already owned 190 shops across the country and employed hundreds of homeworkers.

Alessi sells sizable share to finance growth

The Italian Alessi family behind some of the most recognisable designer homeware products in the world has sold a 40% share of its business for an undisclosed sum to a UK private equity firm.

The Alessi company was fully owned by the founding family, who were looking for a partner to help them grow the firm, Oakley Capital announced this week. Alessi family members Alberto, Alessio, Michele and Stefano kept 60% of the company and pledged to reinvest in the firm.
