US regulators side with Boeing in Bombardier row

Family-controlled Bombardier has called a proposed import duty on its new US fleet “absurd and divorced from reality”, in the latest chapter of its spat with American rival Boeing.

The US Commerce Department this week sided with Boeing in the dispute, proposing punitive tariffs of up to 219% on Bombardier’s C-Series jet, which Boeing claims is being sold in the US below cost thanks to subsidies and bailouts from the Quebec, Canadian and UK governments.

LKK Health Products Group, which makes Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce, has agreed to buy the 37-storey City of London tower – officially named 20 Fenchurch Street but more commonly referred to as the “Walkie Talkie” thanks to its bulbous design.

Demand for meat drives Cargill profits

Cargill, the US’s biggest private company, has made its largest profit in six years thanks to high consumer demand for meat.

The company’s protein business was the biggest contributor to its $3.04 billion adjusted earnings for the year ending 31 May, up 85% from $1.64 billion in the previous financial year. Net profit was $2.84 billion.

David MacLennan, chief executive, attributed the strong result to a two-year restructuring effort and favourable market.

“People [are] suggesting that markets are horribly expensive and that the global economy is going to slow down precipitously,” Kevin Gardiner, Rothschild Wealth Management’s global investment strategist, said.

“I’d keep an open mind because I’m not sure either of those things are true.”
